How do you start a blog? Do you just start writing about your life, or do you put things in context by going back in time to explain things?
Travel
This upcoming week I am travelling. Whenever I tell someone I am travelling, they usually respond, “What again”? Travelling is in my future. Not touristy travel to see all the sights. That can be exhausting.
Tourist or Visitor
Usually, I like to see a couple of places or spots when I travel, but for the most part, I like to immerse myself in the area and meet people. Eat locally, buy locally and talk to the locals. I did this in Ireland, Thailand and Seoul, South Korea, and the UK. I am returning to Ireland to talk more to the locals and be more immersive.
When I returned home from Thailand, my oldest daughter was disappointed because I didn’t visit any beaches. I’m not a beach kind of guy. I prefer to learn new things, drive around, and attend events where I can meet people.
So how can you meet people?
Meeting New People
You can join local groups: Whether it's a sports league, book club or meet-up group, it can help you connect with people with similar interests. Or you can walk around your neighbourhood: Take walks and start conversations with people you meet. In Thailand I was waiting at a large intersection waiting and waiting to cross the street and a local woman came up beside me and said "oh c'mon lets cross and just as we stepped out on the the road the light changed, and we had to run across". When we got to the other side we were laughing and exhilarated and out of breath. She and I talked the whole rest of my walk. It was great fun.
Body Language
You need to watch the body language of the people you speak to. If they are uncomfortable, you need to let it go. Ask for recommendations on local coffee shops, restaurants or other places to visit. Attend local events: Watch for local events such as festivals, concerts or farmers' markets.
These events are great ways to get immersed in the community and meet new people. Take a class: Sign up for a class that interests you, such as cooking, photography or dance. You'll learn something new and have the opportunity to meet new people who share similar interests.
Volunteering
Volunteering is a great way to meet people while giving back to the community. Look for opportunities to volunteer with local organizations or charities.Building relationships takes time and effort, so don't be afraid to put yourself out there and be open to new experiences.
All of these are great strategies if you are at home to...
